The city started off Sunday morning with a vehicle collision, foot pursuit and citizen’s arrest.
Shortly before 12:45 AM, a motor vehicle accident was reported in the 200 block of Charles Street in downtown Fredericksburg, with radio traffic indicating that two suspects fled the scene shortly thereafter.
According to witnesses at the scene, a vehicle was traveling through the intersection of Dixon and Charles Street at a high rate of speed when it lost control and struck the light pole outside the Imperial Cuts and Braids hair salon. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene of the accident on foot shortly thereafter.
Area resident and IT specialist Chris Maconaughey heard the collision and went outside to check on his vehicle when he saw the driver running from the scene. Maconaughey chased after them down the block, and after a brief struggle was able to subdue the driver until law enforcement arrived on the scene. The driver was allegedly under the influence and was observed being treated on the scene for injuries before being taken in for evaluation. They were not the owner of the vehicle, who is currently out of the country.
Virginia Dominion Power was onsite to evaluate the light pole. The Fredericksburg Police Department is currently investigating further.
According to Maconaughey, it is his second time thwarting an intoxicated driver from leaving the scene of the accident at the corner of Charles and Dixon streets.
