Paymon Fine Rug Imports Celebrates 32nd Anniversary

Business Celebrates Anniversary With Generous Incentives

“I am what you call an American dream.”

It seems as though his business has anchored the corner of 501 William Street as long as one can remember. But thirty two years in business doesn’t come easy for anyone, let alone an Iranian immigrant who arrived with just $50 in his pocket.

That’s why October is an especially sweet time of year for local businessman Paymon Matini of Paymon Fine Rug Imports.

The small business he founded during the fall of 1990 in the leased corner of the storefront has transformed into one of the top fine rug retailers in the Washington metropolitan area, now occupying the entire first floor of the building, which Matini purchased in the early 2000s. He doubled down on his commitment (and investment) with a large renovation in 2007.

His customers seek out the authenticity and lasting quality of his Persian rugs, which are all handmade and take between four to six months to make. His spacious showroom, complete with brick walls and Bethlehem Steel framing, includes a variety of products of different sizes, colors and price points.

“It’s something that lasts you a long time. It’s generational. You spend $2,000 or $3,000 and you’ll have it twenty or thirty years.”

Matini and his business have survived two recessions, industry changes, a pandemic and growing competition from mass producers…all while resisting the calls to move his business to the developments in Central Park. He credits former Fredericskburg Mayor Bill Greenup with the advice to stay put.

“He was very complimentary, and I stayed here. I never moved to Central Park.”

Through everything, Matini remains humble. He credits his wife Shirin for not only her influence on the business and assistance with bookkeeping, but also with helping raise their two sons, Anad, and anti-trust litigator and Arman, who is in international relations.

His 32nd anniversary celebration includes very generous incentives on his selection of fine rugs. The showroom is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM with abbreviated Sunday hours from 12:00 PM – 3:30 PM.
