The cupula atop downtown Fredericksburg’s Renwick Courthouse appears to have been vandalized sometime late Monday evening.
On Tuesday morning, construction workers discovered graffiti on top of the courthouse, scrawled in an unknown white substance. It’s suspected the perpetrators accessed the building via ten levels of scaffolding, which is surrounded by a chainlink fence.
The Renwick Courthouse is currently undergoing a multi-month project for repairs and restoration. Workers tell hyperbole they are hesitant to immediately clean it for fear of damaging the patina copper underneath.
Designed by James Renwick Jr. and constructed in 1852, the building served as a courthouse until proceedings relocated to 701 Princess Anne Street in 2014.
The city could not immediately be reached for comment. The story will be updated with additional information as it becomes available.
