The Richmond couple who alleged they were the victims of a racially motivated attack on Partlow Road in Spotsylvania County are facing charges of their own, according to court records.
Jamaria Gaskins and Amylah Majors, who allege they were “chased, threatened with firearms, and called racial slurs” after experiencing car trouble, are now both facing charges that include making a false report to law enforcement and felony charges of obtaining money under false pretenses.
Additionally, Majors is charged with a misdemeanor charge of reckless driving.
The charges, which were filed last Thursday, were published Monday evening on a local Facebook group.
The more serious charges appear to be related to the couple’s GoFundMe effort that was created shortly after the incident.
On that page, Majors and Gaskins alleged that they were “chased, threatened with firearms, and called racial slurs” by a trio of Spotsylvania residents after experiencing car trouble on Partlow Road on the afternoon of July 20th. They were seeking financial assistance for what they stated was “overwhelming” medical bills, therapy, legal assistance and lost income they experienced following the incident.
That GoFundMe effort took in just over $21,000 of the couple’s $125,000 goal. The fundraiser was listed as “donation protected,” meaning the platform guarantees refunds in cases of misuse, abuse or fraud.
Questions to GoFundMe were not immediately returned.
Two Spotsylvania residents are facing charges based on the couple’s allegations that include misdemeanor counts of brandishing a firearm and indecent exposure.
Both of those individuals have hearings next week.
