Hazmat Train Derailment Damages Buildings In Downtown Fredericksburg

No Hazardous Materials Were On The Derailed Cars, According To Officials
A CSX train carrying hazardous materials derailed near the Apartments at Cobblestone Square, damaging several buildings.

A CSX train derailment damaged several garages but resulted in no injuries on Saturday evening in downtown Fredericksburg.

At approximately 9:00 PM, emergency responders converged on the Apartments at Cobblestone Square for a reported train derailment. On the scene, one of the garages for the adjacent apartments appeared heavily damaged with several units completely collapsed.

According to an announcement from the Fredericksburg Police Department, the incident was caused when five container cars from a CSX freight train broke through a barrier wall and damaged four garage units. There were no passengers aboard the train and none of the crew reported injuries.

That same announcement also stated that hazardous materials were present on the train, but weren’t present on the derailed cars. These materials were located by first responders and found to be secure. The scene is currently under investigation by the Fredericksburg Fire Department, Fredericksburg Police department, building officials and CSX, who will be assuming control of the investigation.

hyperbole has reached out for further clarification as to what hazardous materials the train was carrying and will update the story as soon as that information is received.
