Family Business Raises Funds For Surviving Sumners

Fire Escape Crazy Burgers Raised More Than $2,000 For The Family Of Danny and Donovan Sumner

A local business raised more than $2,000 for Danny and Donovan Sumner, the Spotsylvania father and son who drowned last month.

Fire Escape Crazy Burgers parked their food truck at New Post Church last Thursday and provided a limited menu of burgers, with 100% of proceeds benefitting the family of Danny and Donovan Sumner.

It was a full-fledged family operation: Jose Acosta, donning a Superman bandana, worked the grill while his wife Tania took orders and their son Gabriel served them to customers. A hungry crowd of about a hundred enjoyed the spring afternoon (and their burgers), with a number making additional donations directly to the family.

In two hours, the effort raised $2,137 for Sumner’s family. That money will benefit Sumner’s widow Madeline and their younger son Danilo, for whom Sumner was the sole provider for.

“We feel truly blessed that we can help a family who has been through a difficult and devastating loss,” Acosta said.

“We couldn’t do things like this without the help of the community.”

Danny and Donovan Sumner were reported missing after failing to return from fishing off of Legacy Lane in Spotsylvania on March 22, 2025. Police divers located both victims a short time later.
