City parks and facilities have been “repeatedly misused and damaged” in recent months, according to a Tuesday afternoon press release from Fredericksburg City Public Information Officer Caitlyn McGhee.

Graffiti, destructive behavior in restrooms, vandalized athletic fields and burglarized cars are some of the behaviors noted by the city’s statement, titled “Help Take Care of Our Parks.”

The department has reallocated more than $7,000 to cover the necessary materials, equipment and labor and staff have invested 65 hours to handle the repairs and restorations since this past June. Damages have led to lengthy and unexpected closures, and the city says its spending funds on repairs that would otherwise have been used for programs, sports leagues and community events.

hyperbole reached out to the city with questions regarding the timeline of the damage, relationship between the incidents and how the city would modify monitoring and enforcement, however the appropriate individuals were not immediately available for a response.
