James Monroe High School‘s Class of 2023 spent their Thursday morning giving back around the city for the 2023 Ceili Leahy Senior Day of Service.

The senior class split into ten groups to volunteer their time and effort at local non-profit projects around Fredericksburg, including the Harbor House, Friends of the Rappahannock, Downtown Greens, Tree Fredericksburg, R-Board and others.

The morning also included a tree planting in memory of recently slain James Monroe High School senior Jasiah Smith. Members of Smith’s family, including his mother Karen, joined his classmates to plant a pair of trees along the canal path behind the rear of the school. Tree Fredericksburg will help water and maintain them over the next two years.

The Ceili Leahy Senior Day of Service was established to remember and honor the life of JMHS graduate Ceili Anne Leahy (Class of 2014) who passed away from cancer in 2016. It’s organized by Ceili’s parents Leslie and John on behalf of the Ceili Leahy Service Project, which aims to foster volunteerism and community service in Leahy’s memory. The non-profit also awards a $2,500 scholarship annually to a student who “embodies Ceili’s spirit of service.”
